چکیده

This paper presents a statistical methodology for analyzing a complex phenomenon in which deterministic and scaling components are superimposed. 10 Our approach is based on the wavelet multiresolution analysis combined with the scaling analysis of the entropy of a time series. The wavelet multiresolution analysis decomposes the signal in a scale-by-scale manner. The scale-by-scale decomposition generates smooth and detail curves that are evaluated and studied. A wavelet-based smoothing filtering is used to estimate the daily birth 15 rate and conception rate during the year. The scaling analysis is based on the Diffusion Entropy Analysis (DEA). The joint use of the DEA and the wavelet multiresolution analysis allows: 1) the separation of the deterministic and, therefore, non-scaling component from the scaling component of the signal; 2) the determination of the stochastic information characterizing the teen birth 20 phenomenon at each time scale. The daily data cover the number of births phenomenon at each time scale. The daily data cover the number of births to teens in Texas during the period 1964-1999.

Non-extensive diffusion entropy analysis: non-stationarity in teen birth phenomena

A complex process is often a balance between non-stationary and stationary components. We show how the non-extensive Tsallis q-entropy indicator may be interpreted as a measure of non-stationarity in time series. This is done by applying the non-extensive entropy formalism to the Diffusion Entropy Analysis (DEA). We apply the analysis to the study of the teen birth phenomenon. We find that the ...

Seasonality of birth and conception to teenagers in Texas.

We study the births to teenagers during the years 1964-2000 and analyze separately the three main racial/ethnic groups in Texas (White, Hispanic, and African American), as well as married and unmarried teens during the years 1994-2000. By using traditional statistical methods of analysis and a filter based on the multiresolution wavelet analysis, we draw inferences about the times of the year w...

Detection of non-stationarity in speech signals and its application to time-scaling

This paper describes an automatic method for the detection of non-stationarity in speech signals. It is based on three measures of non-stationarity using Line Spectrum Frequencies (LSFs), the derivative of RMS values, and a combination of these two features. The application of the proposed method to time-scaling of speech signals is also presented. Results from an informal listening test suppor...

The Thermodynamics of Social Processes: The Teen Birth Phenomenon

We argue that a process of social interest is a balance of order and randomness, thereby producing a departure from a stationary diffusion process. The strength of this effect vanishes if the order to randomness intensity ratio vanishes, and this property allows us to reveal, although in an indirect way, the existence of a finite order to randomness intensity ratio. We aim at detecting this eff...

MRA parseval frame multiwavelets in L^2(R^d)

In this paper, we characterize multiresolution analysis(MRA) Parseval frame multiwavelets in L^2(R^d) with matrix dilations of the form (D f )(x) = sqrt{2}f (Ax), where A is an arbitrary expanding dtimes d matrix with integer coefficients, such that |detA| =2. We study a class of generalized low pass matrix filters that allow us to define (and construct) the subclass of MRA tight frame multiwa...
